What's a Tech Assistant?

A technician's assistant is trained by and works under the supervision of a licensed veterinary technician. An assistant performs various tasks which frees the technician to attend to the patients and assist the doctors.

No college degree is required to be an assistant. However, there are certain  expectations an assistant should meet: He or she must love animals, be able to cheerfully accept direction from the technicians and the doctors, and be able to maintain good rapport with the clients. (For those who know our assistants, we're sure you'll agree, they excel in all respects!)

A few examples of an assistant's duties are: Walk and feed hospitalized patients; clean cages; restrain pets; nail trims; laundry; answer phones; develop x-rays; prepare and autoclave surgery packs...and the list goes on and on.

My very first job was working for a vet clinic, then I worked in car dealerships for 8 years. In May of 1999, my Lhasa, Willie, had an appointment to see Dr. Clemons. I asked Dr. Clemons if he ever hired his clients. I was excited when Dr. Clemons and Dr. Wright hired me in July, 1999. I love working with such a caring group, and, of course, we all take turns cuddling with your pups and kitties.

My husband and I enjoy hiking, biking and kayaking. Sometimes we take our pups kayaking. We always hear laughs when paddlers see us with our 2 Miniature Pinschers on the front of the kayaks, riding the waves. Our Stafford/Boxer mix prefers to sit in the kayak where she can keep her balance better.  Our five kitties prefer to stay at home where it is dry, then they can sun bathe as they wish.

I do volunteer work with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This is a cause that is dear to my heart. We always have a big Walkathon in October.  Come join us if you would like.
